Gave this to my 4 year old grandson for his birthday and now can't get him to put it down. From the first thing in the morning till bedtime he's playing it. Of course being 4 it's already had it's share of being dropped and so far so good!! I was surprized that he picked it up so fast, still haven't tried the computer programming but it might be hard to get it away from him anyway. Love it!

My 4 year old loves her leapster. She loves to play on it and finds it very entertaining. It does eat through batteries but what electronics don't?
My daughter didn't need any help to get it up and running. She hasn't needed any parental intervention to play her games.
Her reading and letter recognition has gotten better, but she has also started pre-k, so I can't say it is all due to the leapster.
I would recommend this to other parents as a great toy.

Pretty cool save for the really lame, which is this: it takes ONLY a 256KMB SD card, which can't be found in stores anymore because it costs as much to make one of those as it does to make a 1GB card. Moreover, the Amazon.com review is wrong about being able to download without it, so the free download is a bit bogus. On top of that, nowhere on the packaging does it mention this very key requirement and the resulting restriction on internet downloads. Misrepresentation, to put it mildly. To put it truthfully? Ignorant or Sleazy. Either is unacceptable.

I bought this for my 5 year old and have had nothing but trouble with it. The batteries give out rather quickly (we use rechargables) and I am constantly having to recalibrate the machine. I regret buying this toy.

I bought two Leapster 2s for my children and while my son really likes the concept and does okay, the movement of the stylus pen from the center to the right side makes it difficult for him to play because he's LEFT HANDED! If you're right-handed it makes sense. However, he struggled getting the pen string to reach around his hand and at one point looked at it upside down to play! Really, they need a cordless stylus or leave the cord in the middle. It's really presumptive to think that all kids use their right hands and the string isn't long enough to accommodate the difference. Think about that when you purchase; you might want to go with the Leapster that has the middle cord if you have a left handed child.
